Major Passes in India

Khardung La – It is the world’s highest motorable pass in India. It connects Leh and Siachen glaciers. The height of this pass is 17,582ft, In winter this pass remains closed.

Banihal Pass – It is a mountain pass across the Pir Panjal Range, which connects the Kashmir valley in the Jammu and Kashmir to the Himalayas and the plains to the south.

Shipki La – It is a very crucial pass because lies on the Indo-china border. The river Sutlej enters India from Tibet near to this pass. It is located in the Kinnaur district in the state of Himachal Pradesh, India, and Ngari Prefecture in Tibet, China. The pass is one of India’s border posts for trade with Tibet along with Nathu La in Sikkim, and Lipulekh in Uttarakhand.

Bara-Lacha – It is a high mountain pass in the Zanskar range, connecting Lahaul district in Himachal Pradesh to Leh district in Ladakh, situated along the Leh–Manali Highway. The pass also acts as a water divide between the Bhaga river and the Yunan river

Rohtang Pass -It provides a natural divide between the Kullu Valley with a primarily sanatani culture, and the arid high-altitude Lahaul and Spiti valleys with Buddhist culture.  It connects the Kullu Valley with the Lahaul and Spiti Valleys of Himachal Pradesh, India.

Mana Pass– It is one of the highest vehicle-accessible passes in the world, containing a road constructed for the Indian military by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). It is the last point between India and China Border.

Niti Pass– Niti is the last village in the valley before the border with south Tibet. The Niti Pass was an ancient trade route between India and Tibet, and it was sealed after the 1962 Sino-Indian War. Since then, the border has remained sealed.

Nathu La – Nathu La is a mountain pass in the Himalayas in the East Sikkim district. It connects the Indian state of Sikkim with Tibet. The pass, at 4,310 m (14,140 ft) above mean sea level.

Jalep La – Its elevation of 4,267 m or 13,999 ft, is a high mountain pass between East Sikkim District, Sikkim, India, and Tibet Autonomous Region, China. Jalep La is on a route that connects Lhasa to India.
